Usui Mikao was born in an aristocratic samurai family. Thoroughly trained in martial & spiritual arts for his whole life, he was the founder of Usui Reiki. Usui Reiki represents his distilled experience of Esoteric & Tiantai Buddhism, Shugendo (Japanese Mountain Shamanism), Kiko (Qigong) & Shinto systems. Teaching Reiki, he emphasized individual growth & pragmatic spiritual results.

Reiki was born through an extended monastic experience where Usui experienced a satori (sudden enlightenment).  Although Reiki was conceived in that Satori, Usui was already well trained in multiple spiritual practices. The true insight of the satori was combining a simple on the surface spiritual set of tools to get the best healing possible for the time investment.
